Synopsis:

A subversive fantasy-romance steeped in West-African and Caribbean traditions.

Yenni has never been this far from home. With only her wits, her strength and her sacred runelore, the fierce Yirba warrior princess is alone in the Empire of Cresh. It’s a land filled with strange magics and even stranger people—many of whom mistrust anyone who’s different. But Yenni will prove herself, and find a cure for her father’s wasting illness. She will not fail.

No one warned her about the dragons. Especially not about him.

Yes, there is something powerful and compelling about the violet-black dragon known as Weysh. In human form he’s muscular, beautiful—and completely infuriating. What kind of arrogant creature claims a stranger as his Given; as his destined mate? Yenni is no man’s—or dragon’s—plaything. But other magics must be at work here, because Weysh might just be her best hope at finding the answers she seeks.

Only now Yenni can’t tell if she’s fighting her attraction to a dragon…or fighting fate itself.

Can you briefly describe GIVEN and its characters?

Given is the story of Yenni, a princess of the Yirba tribe and her journey abroad to find a cure for her ailing father. She travels to the northern Empire of Cresh to enroll in their top magic Academy in the hope of learning something that will save him. While in Cresh she encounters culture shock, prejudice, and a brash, shape-shifting dragon named Weysh who claims they are “Given” or destined soul mates.

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

Aside from the main characters, Weysh and Yenni, I love Yenni’s closest friend Diedre and Weysh’s best friend Harth. Diedre is another student who is from the Island colonies of Cresh, and I love the supportive sisterly relationship that develops between her and Yenni. Harth is the snarky voice of reason for Weysh. He reigns in Weysh’s more insufferable tendencies and contributes greatly to Weysh’s character development.

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

This book is a mish-mash of many things that happened in my life, but mostly it was a way of working through some difficult things that were happening at the time I was writing it. I was living in Tokyo, which was amazing but also came with its share of microaggressions, which show up in the book through Yenni’s experiences as a foreigner abroad. I also heavily interrogate my frustration and annoyance around cultural appropriation.

And while working on the first draft I had just come out of a bad relationship, and I was processing what led me to put up with less than stellar behavior, what my problematic beliefs about love and romance were and where I’d learned them. I came to the conclusion that I’d made missteps based on the media I was taking in, and resolved to challenge some of romance’s most problematic tropes through writing of my own. It wasn’t easy, and I found myself accidentally reinforcing those tropes in early drafts. But with the help of my readers and editor I feel like I finally got it right.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

Simmer by Mahalia and Burna Boy

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

If you’re looking for accurate visual representations, I’d say Jason Momoa (without the beard) is a good approximation for Weysh. For Yenni I’ve often said Yaya Dacosta, or maybe Aja Naomi King.

What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

Sparkling wine and a cliff overlooking the city lights.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish GIVEN?

There are so many wonderful books that center protagonists and fantasy worlds rooted in African traditions that have come out recently! There’s Tomi Adeyemi’s “Children of Blood and Bone” of course, and “Kingdom of Souls” by Rena Barron. And while not set in an African-inspired world, The Belle’s by Dhonielle Clayton is a gorgeous fantasy set in the fictional world of Orleans, which reminds me of Cresh.

What would you say is the most difficult part of writing a book?

Staying focused and writing every day. Sometimes life gets in the way and makes that tough.

What’s next for you?

Finishing book two!

Interview with Laura Taylor Namey for The Library of Lost Things

The Library of Lost Things

by Laura Taylor Namey
Publisher: Inkyard Press
Release date: October 8th 2019
Genre: Young Adult, Contemporary, Books about Books
 photo addtogoodreadssmall_zpsa2a6cf28.png photo B6096376-6C81-4465-8935-CE890C777EB9-1855-000001A1E900B890_zps5affbed6.jpg

Synopsis:

From the moment she first learned to read, literary genius Darcy Wells has spent most of her time living in the worlds of her books. There, she can avoid the crushing reality of her mother’s hoarding and pretend her life is simply ordinary. But when a new property manager becomes more active in the upkeep of their apartment complex, the only home Darcy has ever known outside of her books suddenly hangs in the balance.

While Darcy is struggling to survive beneath the weight of her mother’s compulsive shopping, Asher Fleet, a former teen pilot with an unexpectedly shattered future, walks into the bookstore where she works…and straight into her heart. For the first time in her life, Darcy can’t seem to find the right words. Fairy tales are one thing, but real love makes her want to hide inside her carefully constructed ink-and-paper bomb shelter.

Still, after spending her whole life keeping people out, something about Asher makes Darcy want to open up. But securing her own happily-ever-after will mean she’ll need to stop hiding and start living her own truth—even if it’s messy.

Can you briefly describe THE LIBRARY OF LOST THINGS and its characters?

Thank you for having me! THE LIBRARY OF LOST THINGS opens with Darcy’s home life and family situation, which is difficult and often frustrating. Darcy lives with a mother who is a hoarder and compulsive shopper. She loves her mother so much, in fact she is the only person in Mom’s life who hasn’t abandoned her. Still, Darcy has felt shame since she was little. She feels it’s easier to become “invisible” than try to reconcile and show the “messy” parts of her life and family. She’s often so pressed that books become more than an escape: they turn into an emotional obsession. This results in a high school senior who has lived out many milestone moments within pages, within the happy endings of other book heroines.

When her mother’s disorder escalates, and when a new, more involved apartment manager shows up and a lease renewal looms, Darcy’s home is in jeopardy. Her relationship with her mother is strung on a tightrope. Darcy realizes she must leave the comfort of her home library before she loses her mom forever.

Yet, it’s not just a hoarding mother who needs new coping strategies. With the help of her best friend, Marisol, and a recent graduate who is a new fixture in her bookstore, Darcy sees all of the things she’s lost to hoarding and sacrificed to hiding. She tries to leave the pages and live her life, not Jane Eyre’s. Not Elizabeth Bennet’s. Even if it’s messy.

Who would you say is your favourite character from the story and why?

I absolutely love Darcy’s half Mexican, half Cuban best friend, Marisol. She is a mash-up of me and my personality (I’m Cuban-American) and my Mexican best friend, Marisol is a fellow foodie, and is rarely without her signature leather jacket. She was so fun to write and I love the loyal friendship between Darcy and Marisol.

How did the story occur to you? Did you find inspiration anywhere?

I have always been a bit like Darcy, using books and their worlds to escape from stress or hard times. For my own book, I asked myself the questions, what would it look like if a teen girl took this coping mechanism to new extremes? And what is it about her life that would prompt her to do this? The Library of Lost Things came right from these thoughts.

If you could choose one song to describe your book, which one would it be?

Glitter in the Air, by Pink

If your book was going to be made into a movie, who would play your characters?

Emma Stone is actually my model for Darcy, so she would be perfect! Asher has always looked like a younger Chase Crawford in my mind. And my own teen daughter could play Marisol in a couple of years.

Fall is here, and we love to find a cosy place to read our favourite books. What drink and place do you think will go with your book to have a perfect book date?

It has to be a Viennese coffee from a place that’s actually in the real North Park San Diego neighbourhood where Darcy’s indie bookstore lives: Caffe Calabria. This shop makes an appearance in my book, too.

Can you recommend your readers any other books in case they are left hungry for more once they finish THE LIBRARY OF LOST THINGS?

Readers of THE LIBRARY OF LOST THINGS will really enjoy HEARTS, STRINGS, and OTHER BREAKABLE THINGS by Jacqueline Firkins

Blog Tour: Breaking Ryann (Bad Boy Reformed #3) by Alyssa Rae Taylor

Breaking Ryann (Bad Boy Reformed #3)
by Alyssa Rae Taylor
Release Date: August 31st 2015
Rate: Enjoyed it (4 stars)
 photo addtogoodreadssmall_zpsa2a6cf28.png photo B6096376-6C81-4465-8935-CE890C777EB9-1855-000001A1E900B890_zps5affbed6.jpg photo B6096376-6C81-4465-8935-CE890C777EB9-1855-000001A1E900B890_zps5affbed6.jpg

Synopsis:

He promised to leave me alone, but that was a lie. I should have known he’d have this pull on me—seeping through my skin and into my bones, burning me from the outside in. It’s just like when we were kids, and I can no longer avoid him. I’ve accepted it, but what will it take to convince him that I am no longer his? Is that really what I want?

I told her I’d leave her alone. But who was I kidding? I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge. He stole my girl—my future—from me. I’m coming back with a vengeance. I’m taking back what he took from me. After all the secrets and lies, can we come back from this? Even if it breaks me, I’ll stop at nothing to protect what’s always been mine.

I think Breaking Ryann is my favorite book in the Bad Boy Reformed series. This is the story of the happy ending we were promised when we started reading Alyssa's series and she didn't disappointed her fans.

Luke is back ready to win Reese and it teared my heart out to see Reese at first rejecting him. Like in other stories their drama continues due to Reese misinformation and don't give Luke the chance to explain himself. However, we can now say that we know Luke and he's not willing to give up.

The story has progressed and the same thing can be said about the writing, the characters and the plot. I think that this story is my favorite out of the three books, not only for the awaited finale, but because we have what we were promised in the synopsis. There's drama, there's love, there's old wounds not healed, there's mistrust, sacrifice, friendship and the decision to make from the characters if being in love is enough to keep them together, this time forever.

This book is the chance for the author to get those unsolved topics that were left behind in the first two books, give the characters time to solve their personal problems and decide what to do with their love. I fell for the characters all over again, with Gia, Logan and Reese, and even harder for Luke.

Breaking Ryann is a great tribute for all Bad Boy Reformed fans and a great finale. The author just kept getting better and delivered an emotional story that would make all her readers happy.

I received these two ARCs in exchange of an honest review. Participating in this tour does not affect my opinion in any way.

For this tour I also read the first two books in the Bad Boy Reformed series. I received these two ARCs in exchange of an honest review. Participating in this tour does not affect my opinion in any way.

Overall conclusion: The Bad Boy Reformed book are a great story, with a lot of potential, great characters and a beautiful story to tell. But in my opinion is one of those series you need to read all books in one day to not end up miserable and hating the story. To understand what I said, read my mini reviews below.

Raising Ryann (Bad Boy Reformed #1)
by Alyssa Rae Taylor
Release Date: January 9th 2014
Rate: Average + (3,5 stars)

Mini Review:

Raising Ryann has a great potential. The characters have a story and there's chemistry between them. However, I thought the storyline would go different due to what I read on the prologue. It's true that the author amends that error in the following books, but leaves the reader a bit confused just by reading the first book. Moreover, there was some details that I missed. I was promised a MMA fighter and thought that this information would be important for the story. However, it's just the profession of Ryann.

To sum up, the author had a great idea and a great story to tell, but maybe she wanted to tell a bit too much or didn't get to organize it well.

I loved that these two people shared a special and traumatizing story and that they could forgive themselves and their past in order to fall in love with each other all over again.

Resisting Ryann (Bad Boy Reformed #2)
by Alyssa Rae Taylor
Release Date: May 26th 2014
Rate: Average + (3,5 stars)

Mini Review:

This book is a bittersweet story for me. I was having such a hard time having the two main characters away from each other that I couldn't enjoy the story in his fully glory. It seemed like the two main characters were doomed no matter what they did.

However, I think that this story gave me as a reader a more insight to the secondary characters and made us fall in love with Luke a bit more. They are funny and it's the other couple meant to end up together and that have it easier than the main one.

In this story the plot was consistent and the story kept evolving to a point where the reader just wanted to cry and grab the next one. I think that this book is better distributed and organized than the first one, making the story more enjoyable despite all the drama that broke my reading heart.
