Laney Walker is a quick witted, athletic, southern tomboy who has never let anyone get too close, because people always leave. With always a sarcastic remark to everyone, she's done a great job. However she's unable to resist the charms of her hot best friend, Evan, who's been there for her, always.
And Laney cannot believe her luck when Evan declares that he's in love with her since he was ten. They start dating and all the problems doesn't matter anymore. That's until destiny comes knocking on Laney's door. Instead of going to the University of Georgia, as she wanted and expected, with Evan, she's going to another one, one one hour from home, but five hours from Evan.
Distance relationships never work, and Laney is nothing but realistic, she lets go Evan free. However, while she's in a college she doesn't want to be, she finds new friends, new possibilities and, maybe, even a chance in true love. But she's always calling Evan, searching for him and waiting for him to call.
Despite her strong link with Evan, Dane Kendrick, southern charmer and hot man Laney was not prepared to meet, gets Laney and he's willing to do everything to make Laney forget Evan and make her fall in love with him.
Who will Laney choose, the familiar, best friend who she was suppose to end up with, or the hot man that makes everything he's in his hand to make Laney happy and safe and that wants her more than anything?
I have to say that I totally love this sweet story, to the point of not being able to wait any more for the next one. And just saying in advance that's going to be Evan's story. Just like that. Hooked.
Ms. Hall creates a great main character, Laney. With trust issues and undeniable love for her best friend, she's what you could call a tomboy, not in an exaggerated way, and it's not aware of her own beauty or the effect that she has in other people.
Evan is Laney's school sweetheart and her best friend. He's sweet and wants to be with Laney since he defended her at school when they were ten. Like I said all too sweet. Despite his cute and romantic intentions, while reading the book and getting to know more and more the Laney who's away from Evan, I kind of hated him. He's having fun at Georgia, going to parties and spending time with the only person that really hurt Laney and make her go away from Evan's side. It's like come on!
He was way too cocky and I hated how Laney encouraged his thoughts that Laney was his. I wanted to punch first Evan in the face for being such a jackass and then punch Laney for being so innocent, good person and kind of naïve when Evan was in the picture.
I understand their friendship, though. I think that's beyond beautiful and were afraid to see it broken at the end of the book. Because when you change friendship for love, sometimes, when that doesn't work, there's no turning back to the friendship phase.
And Dane? Well, at first is kind of overwhelming. He's always near Laney and wanting to please her. I was afraid that Laney's stalker was Dane (*Crazy thoughts everywhere*). As we have said before, Laney has trust issues and that means that from her point of view you see Dane as someone to be careful with. And then you get to see Dane's point of view and you let a huge, dramatic and soothing sigh. He's just taking care of her, trying to make her happy and safe and he's in love with her from the first time he asked If they were living three people in a room of two. So If you think Evan was sweet, Dane has the oscar to the most sweet guy, ever.
Now some quick characters-review. Laney's supposed best friend? A total bitch, the psycho type. New best friend? Such a cute, adorable and funny girl. Tate, Dane's brother? Totally awesome guy and as hot as his brother. Sawyer Beckett, Dane and Tate's friend? Just rocked my world. He brings the fun to the story whenever he's at. Just, the best. Zach? Was like the voice of conscience, always giving wise advices to Laney. Just like a personal Jiminy Cricket for Laney.
A great thing about this book is that we not only get the chance to read her point of view, but Evan's and, then, Dane's. Like I said before, it's nice to have a second point of view, because it we haven't had it, I would probably not like Dane like I do now.
Overall I liked the changed Laney has in her life, new town, new friends and new experiences. She starts to really live by coming out of her shell, trusting more and more people and being able to enjoy the unknown.
Emerge is everything the author promises. This story is about first love, true love and primal love full of desire and passion, the unexpected turns in life, betrayal, friendship and new experiences and, most important, about growing up and evolve.
I truly recommend this book and that's why I'm giving it a four and a half gorjuss dolls. Why I say this? Because I have one conclusion: I NEED to read the second book. That's what good, sweet and romantic stories do to us. And that's why we are putting this book in our "must read" list.
Austin Butler as Evan
Ana Mulvoy as Laney
Garret Hedlund as Dane
