The Continent (The Continent #1) by Keira Drake

The Continent (The Continent #1)
by Keira Drake
Publisher: Harlequin TEEN
Release Date: January 3rd 2017
Genre: Young Adult
Rate: Enjoyed it (4,5 stars)

Synopsis:

For her sixteenth birthday, Vaela Sun receives the most coveted gift in all the Spire—a trip to the Continent. It seems an unlikely destination for a holiday: a cold, desolate land where two “uncivilized” nations remain perpetually at war. Most citizens tour the Continent to see the spectacle and violence of battle—a thing long vanished in the Spire. For Vaela—a smart and talented apprentice cartographer—it is an opportunity to improve upon the maps she’s drawn of this vast, frozen land.

But an idyllic aerial exploration is not to be had: the realities of war are made clear in a bloody battle seen from the heli-plane during the tour, leaving Vaela forever changed. And when a tragic accident leaves her stranded on the Continent, she has no illusions about the true nature of the danger she faces. Starving, alone, and lost in the middle of a war zone, Vaela must try to find a way home—but first, she must survive.

The Continent, for me, was one of those YA books that you don't know what to expect from it. I started reading it not really knowing what I was going to encounter, but I ended up loving it.

And what's The Continent? Because that's what all this book is about. Vaela has lived all her life in the Spire, a pacific and what you could call an utopian place where there's peace, no hunger and everyone works in order to provide something to the society. But all that changes when Vaela's parents gift her a trip to see The Continent, a dangerous place where two nations are constantly in war.

What I liked about this book is the not knowing what direction was going to take. I didn't know what was going to happen or what to expect from the story. Some other books, by reading the synopsis, you have a clear idea what's going to happen throughout the story, but I could have never imagined all the things I read in Keira Drake's book.

About the main characters, Vaela and Noro, I liked that they were strong and powerful characters in their own individual selves. Vaela, for instance, came from a wealthy family, she has had everything since she was born, but when tragedy strikes and she finds herself in The Continent, alone, without food, friends or help you see how resilient she is. Which was a surprise, since I was hoping to find the typical "damsel in distress". She was approachable and felt real all at the same time because she made mistakes and had to learn how to keep going from the moment she set foot in The Continent. Plus, her grief was also very real and you could see how it was not dismissed by the author at any moment.
On the other hand, Noro was the complete opposite. He knows grief and what it means to lose the people you love on a regular basis. He is a survivor as well as kind and gentle. I liked that he didn't "help" Vaela all the time, but wanted to help her learn and see that she could also do it. But it was also super cute to see how deep down, no matter how hard he tried or how much he taught her, he couldn't resist being preoccupied over her.

Their relationship was not an insta-love one, which put that extra likeness to the story. Noro did not made a move on Vaela until she had come to terms with her grief and with who she was now at The Continent. So you can say that it was a progressive one and their moments together are beautiful but yet brief for those of us who love the couple so much.

The story was a raw one. The main character, Vaela, was a wealthy, carefree cartographer at the Spire who heard about all the stories and battles going on at The Continent, who thought it was sad that it happened and had a lot of progressive thoughts that could lead to a solution. But at the same time was curious to see in first hand what was going on. Until she sees for herself that all those stories are awfully real and happening, that it was brutal and that death was everywhere for no reason at all and they, The Spire, were doing nothing to prevent it. Sound familiar, guys?

Why I am not giving the 5 stars to this book? Simply because I truly started loving it when Vaela was with the Aven'ei, when she made friends and started being the Vaela she truly was. That's when the story really starts to escalate and go super fast from a reader's point of view. Because you just want to know what is going to happen and who's going to remain at the end of the story. And that's how I know the second book is going to be a powerful one, too. I am just dying to start reading it and, of course, to see the cover for this title.

Full of friendship, love, war, grief, adventure, tragedy and deception, The Continent is one of those stories that will blow your mind and that you will need more of it when you are done.

Listen to my book playlist for The Continent

"...He said that itzatsune rarely marry, which is fine with him, because girls are - I quote him here - 'always trying to kiss him,' and he doesn't have time for that sort of thing. And he insists that he shall be far more skilled than even you when he finally achieves the rank."
Noro leans back, smirking. "Did he now?"
"Yes, he did. He's quite sure if himself."

---

"I will never give up hope," I say, but wonder half a second if this is true.
She shrugs. "Hope for things that are possible, then. Hope for clear skies amidst the storms of summer, or for the safe return of our warriors from the battlefields at Sana-Zo and the Narrow Corner. Hope for a happy marriage and many sons, if that should please you. Never hope for peace, Vaela. Not here. Not on the Continent."
"I can't help it. After all, hope is not sustained by the likeliness of a thing, but by the desire for it, and it is my dearest wish that you and all your people would know the peace I have described."

---

He smoothes a lock of hair away from my cheek, tucking it behind my ear. "I hope for you to live a long, happy life."

---

"Nothing could prepare you for what is to come, Vaela. Nothing on this Earth."

100 Hours
Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books
Release Date: March 28, 2017
Genre: Young Adult, Thriller

Synopsis:

Maddie is beyond done with her cousin Genesis’s entitled and shallow entourage. Genesis is so over Miami’s predictable social scene with its velvet ropes, petty power plays, and backstabbing boyfriends.

While Maddie craves family time for spring break, Genesis seeks novelty—like a last-minute getaway to an untouched beach in Colombia. And when Genesis wants something, it happens.

But paradise has its price. Dragged from their tents under the cover of dark, Genesis, Maddie, and their friends are kidnapped and held for ransom deep inside the jungle—with no diva left behind. It all feels so random to everyone except Genesis. She knows they were targeted for a reason. And that reason is her.

Now, as the hours count down, only one thing’s for certain: If the Miami hostages can’t set aside their personal problems, no one will make it out alive.

In my upcoming YA suspense 100 HOURS, Genesis and her cousin Maddie come from opposite ends of the privilege spectrum, but when they wind up kidnapped for ransom during spring break in Colombia and have no one else to count on, they discover they have more in common than either of them thought.

If you’ve read any of my previous releases, 100 HOURS probably seems like a departure for a Rachel Vincent book. And that’s what I thought, back when it was just me and an idea. But as I wrote the story and got to know the characters, I realized that even though this book is set in the Colombian jungle and these characters have no supernatural abilities, 100 HOURS is very much a book about the themes that draw me in over and over. Survival. Family friction and loyalty. High-stakes pulse-racing action. Twists, turns, secrets, and revelations. Girls who can fend for themselves—and for anyone else who needs help.

Rachel Vincent is a former English teacher and an eager champion of the Oxford comma. She shares her home in Oklahoma with two cats, two teenagers, and her husband, who’s been her # 1 fan from the start. Rachel is older than she looks and younger than she feels, and she remains convinced that writing about the things that scare her is the cheapest form of therapy—but social media is a close second.

Synopsis:

In the tradition of I Know What You Did Last Summer and How to Get Away with Murder, five teens must overcome their paranoia in order to keep their teacher’s death a secret in this fast-paced suspense thriller.

Nothing ruins summer vacation like a secret…especially when it involves a dead teacher.

Ivy used to be on top of the social ladder, until her ex made that all go away. She has a chance to be Queen Bee again, but only if the rest of the group can keep quiet.

Tyler has always been a bad boy, but lately he’s been running low on second chances. There’s no way he’s going to lose everything because someone couldn’t keep their mouth shut.

Kinley wouldn’t describe herself as perfect, though everyone else would. But perfection comes at a price, and there is nothing she wouldn’t do to keep her perfect record—one that doesn’t include murder charges.

Mattie is only in town for the summer. He wasn’t looking to make friends, and he definitely wasn’t looking to be involved in a murder. He’s also not looking to be riddled with guilt for the rest of his life…but to prevent that he’ll have to turn them all in.

Cade couldn’t care less about the body, or about the pact to keep the secret. The only way to be innocent is for someone else to be found guilty. Now he just has to decide who that someone will be.

With the police hot on the case, they don’t have much time to figure out how to trust each other. But in order to take the lead, you have to be first in line…and that’s the quickest way to get stabbed in the back.

Hello Amanda! We are super excited to have you back in our FFBC tours.

Could you tell our Book Addicts a little bit about Secrets, Lies & Scandals?

Secrets, Lies, and Scandals is a kind of a How to Get Away With Murder Lois Duncan throwback. It’s fast-paced, intense, and features a cast of main characters that get in a lot of trouble and have to figure out how, exactly, to trust each other and keep from getting caught.

What can you tell us about all the main characters in this novel? Which one would you say is your favorite and why?

They’re all my favorite! I love these characters! That’s really difficult. Cade is great. He’s so tough on the outside but he’s so protective and strong and loves his sister more than anything. Then you have Tyler, who really is trying to get back on the right track when everything goes wrong. And Ivy, who was the queen bee, starts genuinely questioning her decisions morally and who she has been as a person. Then there’s Kinley, who prides herself on being perfect and wants to make her father proud. But last we have Mattie, who I saved because he’s the moral compass of the book. There’s no way to choose. I can’t do it.

What would you do if you were one of the characters in your story? (We’d probably freak out a lot!).

Oh, I’d call 9-1-1 immediately. And I’d probably cry. It would be the shortest story ever.

How did you come up with the story? Did you find inspiration in any other story/movie/show and how has this affected your writing?

I absolutely adored the Lois Duncan books in middle school. They were so fast-paced and scary and appealing and wonderful! I can’t imagine honestly ever being as awesome as Lois Duncan was, but she was an influence for sure. As for the story, I like storylines that are fast-paced, fun and appealing to teens (I hope)!

Tell us your favorite quote from Secrets, Lies & Scandals.

“His left eye was partially open, revealing a half-moon of jelly-white eyeball.” There are others that I love too, but they don’t make as much sense out of context—and that quote is from the back of the book! J

Is there a specific scene that you had the most fun to write?

I love the scene where the entire crew is in the car on the dirt road. It’s raining, the road is wet, and the car is fishtailing.

If you had to pick one song to be the Theme Song for Secrets, Lies & Scandals – Which one would you pick?

I would LOVE to use “Secret” by the Pierces, but Pretty Little Liars already did….

I also found this song, which I think works too….

“Best Kept Secret” by Hattie Keane

Imagine that we get to see your book on the big screen (how awesome would that be?). Who would you pick to play your characters?

That would be SO AWESOME. It’s super hard to choose a good cast, but here are some fun options! However, if a real casting director wanted a shot at it, I mean, I would be totally cool with that.

Ivy: Lily Collins

Mattie: Dylan O’Brien

Kinley: Aeriel Miranda

Tyler: Nicholas Hoult

Cade: Takayuki Yamada

Is there any recommendations you could give your readers to be in the “perfect mood” to read Secrets, Lies & Scandals (specific music, snacks…)?

Go on vacation and slip it in your beach tote! Add flip-flops, water, and sand!

What’s next for you?

My next book from Simon Pulse is called Such a Good Girl and I’m ridiculously excited about it. One of the taglines we’re considering is “Even good girls do bad things.”

Thank you so much for everything, Amanda!

Thank you! I appreciate you all so much! J
