Fates Divided (Halven Rising #1)
by Jules Barnard
Release Date: August 31st 2015
Genre: New Adult, Urban Fantasy, Fantasy
Synopsis:
Elena Rosales has busted her ass to get into a good college. She’s the only one in her family ever to attend, and expectations are high. No pressure. But Elena’s got this one in the bag, because she’s as dependable as the molecules she studies, as reliable as the chemical reactions that comfort her in their predictability. Until they don’t.
Elena has always wondered why her mother abandoned her on her first birthday. It’s not until she turns eighteen and her chemistry experiments go berserk that she learns the truth: Her mother wasn’t human, and the Fae are willing to harm those Elena loves if she doesn’t use her power over the elements to cure them of a deadly disease.
Derek, Elena’s brooding neighbor, isn’t the friendliest guy, but he has access to an off-hours lab and is willing to help Elena create the antivirus. He has his own secrets to keep, and this business Elena is mixed up in could blow his cover. But when Elena and Derek get together, more than chemicals spark fire—and they soon discover just how complicated attraction can get when they find themselves on the other side of the portal, fighting for survival. Lives collide, and allegiance and love are tested, in Fates Divided.
-----
In the Halven Rising Series, love and ancient allegiances are threatened when the worlds of Fae and Halven collide. Each Halven Rising novel features a different couple and may be read as a standalone, but an overreaching story arc connects the books, so it’s fun to read them in order.
Hello Jules! We are super excited to have you in our FFBC tours.
Thank you! I’m so happy to be here.
Favorite Book?
That’s like choosing a favorite child. Can’t do it!
Favorite TV show?
When I’m not hiding my head during the fight scenes and gore, I really love Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. I also love historical and period series like Poldark, Outlander, and Vikings.
Favorite Food?
That’s easy. Chocolate cupcakes. You got your carbs, your dairy (frosting)—I think there might even be protein in there. It’s the perfect food!
If you could meet one author, dead or alive, who would it be?
Karen Chance. I love her urban fantasy novels.
Something to say to our Book Addicts?
Thank you for your support of books! You allow us authors to do what we love.
Can you describe Elena and Derek and their relationship? What would you say makes them a perfect book couple?
Elena can be impulsive, while Derek is cautious and practical. In the end, both their strengths are needed to overcome the obstacles. They work together, urging and supporting each other along the way, and the combination results in steamy chemistry and a powerful alliance.
How did you come up with the story? Did you find inspiration in any other story/movie/show and how has this affected your writing?
The Morganville Vampires Series by Rachel Caine, and the Dorina Basarab Series by Karen Chance inspired the Halven Rising Series. And probably hundreds of other books I’ve read over the years, but that’s too many to list :)
Tell us your favorite quote from Fates Divided.
“When I’m not near you, I’m thinking about you and wondering how long until I see you again. When I’m with you, I’m thinking of ways to get close and touch you, and when you smile…I wonder if there is anything more beautiful in the world. Make that worlds.”
Is there a specific scene that you had the most fun to write?
I’d have to go with the first Elena/Derek make out scene, which involved Elena’s macho male cousin barging in on them. There were so many things going on in that scene—Elena’s Fae bodyguard in the living room fighting with her roommate, Reese, Elena’s cousin bugging the crap out of Elena while she tried to keep the Fae under wraps from her family. It was a fun dance as an author to orchestrate everything, and the tension was sizzling.
If you had to pick one song to be the Theme Song for Fates Divided – Which one would you pick?
I don’t have a single theme song for Fates Divided, but here are a few I listened to over and over while writing: Burn by Ellie Goulding, Radioactive by Imogine Dragons, and If I Lose Myself by OneRepublic
Are there any recommendations you could give your readers to be in the “perfect mood” to read Fates Divided (specific music, snacks…)?
Hmm, there is a small theme in the story about food, so make sure you have some on hand or you might get hungry. Other than that, be open to a new world filled with paranormal mystery, action, and romance. This is a Fae story that reshapes the common myths about Fae and spins them in a new direction.
What’s next for you?
The next book in the Halven Rising Series is Fates Entwined, and it’s about Elena’s roommate, Reese, and the bodyguard assigned to Elena, Keen. Elena and Derek will also be in Fates Entwined, because they are a part of the overreaching story arc, but the romance will be between Keen and Reese.
In the meantime, I’m wrapping up the final book in my contemporary Blue Series, titled New Blue. New Blue releases March 24th. If you enjoy younger contemporary romance and haven’t tried the Blue Series, the first book, Deep Blue, is FREE right now on all outlets.
Thank you so much for everything, Jules!
It’s my pleasure chatting with you! Thank you for having me.
