Warring families. Forbidden love. And danger they can’t escape…
Daggers. Roses. Cowboys. Boat Men. Survivors of Earth's Last War, four “families” vie to rule the dreary streets of Rain City through violence and blood. Valencia Hara, Princess of the wealthy Black Roses, is raised in warrior ways with sharpened steel. But she is no ordinary Rose. She is Cursed—tainted with the ability to see seconds into the future…
To avenge his father's death, Sebastian Leold, of the rival gang Two Daggers, must face off against the Black Princess, he with his dagger, she with her katana sword. Yet a secret from a shared past leaves him unable to kill beautiful Valencia; nor can she kill him. For they once knew each other beyond their blood feud…and they have more secrets in common than they know.
But in a world filled with vengeance and violence, there can be no room for love…
The Thorn and the Sinking Stone is one of those stories that you know has a lot of potential just by reading its synopsis. With a forbidden love that will remain you of the famous Shakespearean story of Romeo and Juliet, dangerous situations and with a paranormal touch, C.J. Dushinski was definitely a good read.
The problem I had while reading the book was that the beginning was a bit slow. Too many details and I was in a mood where I wanted to get to the juicy parts of the story. I'm not sure if you had one of those days, but I find myself putting it down a couple of times before getting seriously into the story.
If I had to describe the story I would say that the book is all about warring gang families who have hated each other as much as they have been fighting. As you might guess, Sebastian and Valencia fall in love and they belong to different families. Romeo and Juliet all the way down, right? Well, while Juliet was as delicate as a flower, Valencia is pretty badass and rich. Sebastian has also his own moves and belongs to another gang, but he's definitely poor. These two characters not only had their family hatred or the fact that they belong to a different and dangerous gang against each other, but also a different social status. I also loved that the author didn't stop there, but brought a supernatural touch to the story with the Cursed, people with certain abilities who are being hunted by the government.
Sounds good right? Overall, The Thorn and the Sinking Stone it's a good story, with an original view and with badass characters - it was about time to have a badass Juliet - that I would have rated it more if it weren't for the difficulties I had while trying to read the book at the beginning. Filled with danger, fights, romance, forbidden love and supernatural characters, this book is definitely one I will say to you to try and read it.
