Synopsis:
Perfection comes at a price.
As soon as the government passed legislation allowing humans to be genetically engineered and sold as pets, the rich and powerful rushed to own beautiful girls like Ella. Trained from birth to be graceful, demure, and above all, perfect, these “family companions” enter their masters’ homes prepared to live a life of idle luxury.
Ella is happy with her new role as playmate for a congressman’s bubbly young daughter, but she doesn’t expect Penn, the congressman’s handsome and rebellious son. He’s the only person who sees beyond the perfect exterior to the girl within. Falling for him goes against every rule she knows…and the freedom she finds with him is intoxicating.
But when Ella is kidnapped and thrust into the dark underworld lurking beneath her pampered life, she’s faced with an unthinkable choice. Because the only thing more dangerous than staying with Penn’s family is leaving…and if she’s unsuccessful, she’ll face a fate far worse than death.
For fans of Keira Cass’s Selection series and Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden series, Perfected is a chilling look at what it means to be human, and a stunning celebration of the power of love to set us free, wrapped in a glamorous—and dangerous—bow.
Perfected is a book that as I future scientist I truly enjoyed. I wanted to see how Kate created this new world were humans were bred genetically perfect and trained to be the perfect pets. Because if someone is bred in a tube it's not truly a human, right? Well... you really need to read this book to open your mind with a Young Adult touch and a romance story that keeps the reader hooked until the end.
In Kate Jarvik Birch's dystopian world, we meet Ella who's one of those "pets" bred to be perfect. The story starts with her being sold and ends in a mind-blowing twirl of emotions. As you all might guess, Ella, even though she's born in a lab she's still human and has feelings. That's the change we experience along with Ella throughout the whole story.
All the characters in Perfected are very well developed and, as Ella, suffer a big change. Ms. Jarvik gave each character a personality and made the story work. However, along the story I had some questions that made me doubt Ella's society and was hoping to get some answers at some point, but never got them.
Kate made an amazing job with Perfected. I would say it's simply another type of society and brings the science to another level. We get to see the consequences of and it brings a lot of feelings and thinking to do.
The only thing I tell you is to handle this story carefully because it has a major cliffhanger that would cause serious feelings to a YA fan. But definitely it's a must read without a second thought! And I simply want more!
