Synopsis:
As the Governor’s daughter, Charlotte McClain is an expert in playing pretend. High society, the men her mother shoves in her direction and a Pre-Law major are all a part of her perfect pretense. But when she pretends to be a nobody during Spring Break, she meets someone who rocks her world.
Mason Rowell knows heartbreak and Spring Break don’t mesh well, so he allows the mysterious Charlotte to seduce him. What should have been a fling, results in something deeper. After Spring Break has long since passed, he moves to Washington to pursue his graduate degree, but what he never expected to find living among the rich and pompous, was the girl who gave him the strength to change and the desire to start anew.
When the guy Charlotte can’t forget goes from a sensual memory to temptation in the flesh, her facade is put to the test. If she surrenders to his charms, she risks ruining her mother’s perfect career and master plan. Playing pretend is what Charlotte does best, but how long can she pretend she doesn't love the man who made her proud of her true self?
**A light, sexy NA Contemporary Romance (17+)**
Playing Pretend is a sexy love story, with a New Adult touch, but without losing the innocence during Charlotte and Mason's story.
This story reminded me a lot of those movies where the girl is the daughter of the president or someone as important and falls in love with a boy while pretending not to be the daughter of someone important. I think this was one of the main reasons I wanted to read Juliana's story.
Charlotte's need to break free from her mother, who's one of those obsessed, rich mother who tells her daughter even with which boy she has to go out with, leads her to take some sort of adventure and that's when Mason and Charlotte met.
The main characters were both sweet and innocent, but at the same sexy and hot. They have a chemistry from the very beginning at it charges the whole story up until the end. I liked that the author alternated Charlotte's point of view with Mason's, and she did it perfectly. Not once I doubted neither of the characters or thought that, for example, the boy was girly or something similar.
Of course, there has to be a little bit of drama in the story and there was, but it was not overdosed. What I really liked was the idea of deciding what she really wants: to keep pretending her whole life or to be with the man she loves. The idea was kind of dramatic.
The writing was great. Juliana Haygert has her very own style that brings a lot of credibility to all the details and scenes on the story and she's capable of perfectly express the characters feelings and surroundings to the reader.
As in the movies, the ending was one of those nice endings, expected, but yet so sweet you simply let out a "oooh".
Overall, the story was quick, romantic and lovable. I enjoyed it and had a good time reading about Charlotte's life and her relationship with Mason. If you were looking for a light, sweet New Adult that you can quickly read it this weekend, you'd like Playing Pretend.
While Juliana Haygert dreams of being Wonder Woman, Buffy, or a blood elf shadow priest, she settles for the less exciting—but equally gratifying—life of a wife, mother, and author. Thousands of miles away from her former home in Brazil, she now resides in Connecticut and spends her days writing about kick-ass heroines and the heroes who drive them crazy.
